I want to hold your hand

I may be a sucker but a well made ad, even if it's pandering to the gays to get our business, always gets me. It might be because it wasn't so long ago that there weren't even pandering ads. We just didn't exist except as the punch line or as the thing you never wanted to be.

I liked this one. I liked the concept that being different in a way that you try to hide, in a way that sets you apart from others, can make you feel unsafe. But, it can also feel liberating when you find someone who is different just like you. The Beatles weren't wrong. Sometimes I just want to hold your hand, and slowly the world is becoming a place where we can do that without fear.

  1. You're right. Once upon a time any sort of attempt to appeal to potential gay customers would have been strictly subtextual. Rather wonderfully, this insurance ad makes no attempt to shilly-shally and pretend that it is talking about something else. The way that being different is made universal by making his difference physical is inspired. Gay or not, everyone has felt alone and beset on all sides at times. In a decade or so, it would be lovely to think that some documentary would include this as an example of how things change. "Once upon a time, not so long ago" the commentator might say " targeting a gay audience was seen as daring and risky. How times change!"
